When Believing in Divine Immanence Explains Vaccine Hesitancy: A Matter of Conspiracy Beliefs?

This article analyzes the relationship between religiosity and vaccine hesitancy by highlighting role of a specific dimension that makes some people more prone to explaining health conditions as divine agency—the belief in immanent presence everyday life. Accordingly, these may undervalue vaccination solution cope with pandemic be skeptical vaccines. We suggest mechanism focusing on mediating beliefs conspiracy theories, given immanence theories share common trait attributing agency hidden forces. Beliefs turn, have been shown among strongest predictors hesitancy. By using moderated mediation analysis Italian survey data collected during Covid-19 pandemic, we show such helps explain believing not adhering institutional religiosity. In contrast, this does apply when conception is framed within system belonging religion.
